Selling Art To Survive
The Tribal Art Society was created by Mal Decker to provide relief during a severe African drought. It imported African art, sold it via space ads and direct mail and gave back most of its profits to CARE to furnish water pumps to the artist’s villages. Smithsonian, Natural History, Audubon and dozens of other magazines provided pages and spreads, which developed a buyer’s list. A catalog/insert was included in each shipment of art (follow the link to download it) and this same catalog was included in mailings to outside lists. It pulled a 17% response at an average order of $138.
